This year’s American Music Awards were full of buzz-worthy moments that successfully entertained viewers around the globe.
The 2015 AMA’s were filled with highs and lows. From an emotional tribute to the terrorist attacks in Paris to an awkward mid-show make out, there were plenty of entertaining moments.
Host, Jennifer Lopez kicked off the show with a with a lively performance that compiled some of the year’s greatest musical hits. She started off singing and transitioned into an exciting dance routine which demonstrated J.Lo’s incredible range of talent.
Throughout the show, J-Lo shared some personal anecdotes about her own experience in the music industry and how the AMA’s helped influence her as an artist. It added a warm touch to the show and provided the audience with greater understanding of the music industry.
Later in the show, Demi Lovato performed her hit song “Confident.” The artist, however, failed to produce an adequate performance. Her songs redundant lyrics were screamed over and over again like a broken record, which became repetitive and showcased a lack of variety.
Another highlight of the night was “The Penatonix,” an acappella group that performed alongside a full orchestra which played scores from the Star Wars original soundtrack. The juxtaposition of the orchestra and the acappella group made for an interesting new approach to a classic soundtrack. Harrison Ford even made a surprise appearance to introduce the group which brought the crowd to their feet in applause.
Meghan Trainor started off the night performing her hit song, “Like I’m Gonna Lose You.” While the song itself was nothing special, Trainer proved her worth with a flawless performance. Then, she segued into another song called “Marvin Gaye” which she performed with Charlie Puth. At the end of the song, the two locked lips for an intense make out session in front of millions of viewers which sent rumors flying and generated significant buzz.
One of the most special moments of the night was a tribute to the Paris terrorist attacks by Celine Dion. She sang Edith Piaf’s famous, “Hymne a L’Amour” while a montage of devastating images from the attacks played in the background. The perfection of her voice and the simplicity of her performance had a profound impact on the audience and brought many to tears. It was a remarkable moment that everyone in the room was honored to experience.
To finish off the night, Justin Bieber performed three songs from his new album “Purpose.” He started out singing a slow version of “What Do You Mean” and went on to perform “Where Are You Now,” and a dramatic rendition of “Sorry” in which Bieber stood under a rain machine. The singer was most definitely lip-syncing because if the microphone was on, his voice would have been overshadowed by the sound of the rain. Regardless, it was a fun and unique set and Bieber took command of the stage, closing the show on a high note.
The live performance took place at Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on November 22nd, but it can be watched in full at abc.go.com.
All in all, the show was entertaining and had some truly substantial moments that had great impact on the audience.
