Mira Costa’s rugby team won against View Park Prep 52-22 on Friday at View Park Prep. The team was still able to persevere even though junior Kevin Russel, senior Ryan Toomey, and senior Justus Tavai were unable to participate.

Together, the team was tackling and tucking flawlessly. As a result of Costa’s misunderstanding of some calls made by the referee, the Mustangs ended up playing 12 players against the other team’s 15 towards the end of the game. According to junior Gunnar Kissman, senior Justin Johnson was a key player on Friday, winning almost every lineout except one.

“The game went well despite our handicap with fewer players in the second half,” Kissman said. “We started playing our game, moving the ball more, and drawing penalties from their weaknesses.”

The Mustangs have their next game on Friday Jan 15. at Long Beach Wilson. The Mustangs are now 2-0 while Long Beach Wilson is at 1-2. According to senior Makai Elep, Long Beach Wilson was in the championship last year.

“I think we have a good chance of winning our next game against Long Beach Wilson,” Elep said. “If we play our game we should have no problems.”
