Mira Costa’s boys basketball team lost 85-52 to Oakland Tech High School on Wednesday in the championship round of the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic in Torrey Pines. Although the Mustangs fought hard for a place in the finals, their effort could only earn second place.
Sophomore guard Bobby Barkley scored 13 points and senior guard Johnny Mims added 10 points as well as three rebounds, 5 assists and a steal. According to Barkley, the team wasn’t creating enough chances, and the defense wasn’t strong enough.
“They were beating us on both sides of the court,” Barkley said. “I was just trying to make the most of every opportunity I had.”
The Mustangs are now 9-6 overall and will next play University High School at home in a non-conference game. According to junior guard Ryan White, the team will continue to prepare for Bay League and keep working hard.
“This was a good performance in this tournament, and now we have to take the next step in our season in preparing for Bay League,” White said.
