Winter storm El Niño has hit the South Bay and has caused Mira Costa High School Athletics and Activities Advisor Jon Shaw to cancel numerous sport practices and take extra maintenance measures.
El Niño is caused by unusual warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean. According to Shaw, our school takes this into consideration by cancelling outdoor sports games and practices once the playing fields are unsafe. Campus maintenance are also clearing out debris and making sure that all areas, such as in the cafeteria, are safe to prevent students from slipping.
“Since Mira Costa is an outside campus we are exposed to the rain,” Shaw said. “The rain is great for California’s water conservation and the plants throughout the school. We are prepared for the rain and will try to carry things out as usual as possible.”
