Mira Costa’s girls basketball team defeated Palos Verdes High School Tuesday 43-33 in their first Bay League game of the season. The Mustangs were led by senior Halle Maeda who showed exceptional hustle and scored 18 points.
Costa got off to a slow start in the first quarter, allowing the Sea Kings to take a four point lead. In the second half however, the Mustangs were able to regain the lead and hold off Palos Verdes with their defense.
“We all began hustling really hard in the second half,” sophomore guard Haley Herdman said. “I think that we did a good job coming back from being down.”
The 9-5 Mustangs will take on Peninsula at home Friday at 6 P.M. in their second Bay League game. According to Herdman, the Mustangs will have to work on keeping a solid mentality right from the start of the game.
“It is important to play every game with the same mentality,” Herdman said. “We always need to play as hard as we can and not worry so much about the talent of the opponent.”
