The Drama Department held auditions on January 11, 12, and 13 for the upcoming spring musical The Addams Family.
Drama students were required to attend auditions on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday the vocal auditions were held, which consisted of singing one song cut from the audition packet of songs. The dance auditions were held on Tuesday where the students had to dance in groups of 5-6 people. Call backs were held on Wednesday for students who performed well in the initial tryouts.
“Students prepare for their auditions by rehearsing the audition packet and getting critiques by other students,” Drama Vice President Maddy Huggins said. “A lot of students also have voice and dance coaches outside of school for extra practice, I also hold workshops at my house for students to practice with each other.”
Workshops were held at Huggins’s house two weeks prior to auditions to help students prepare and feel more comfortable for auditions. During the workshops students would perform songs in front of each other and critique one another to help them with areas they need work on such as facial expression, musical technique and body position.
“The requirements of singing, dancing and cold reading at auditions are very reasonable for musical theatre auditions,” Mira Costa drama teacher Carol Matthews said. “The students must maintain a minimum of a 2.0 gpa and have no F’s in any of their classes to remain in the show.”
