Mira Costa’s girls water polo team lost to Santa Monica 10-8 in a non-Bay League game on Friday at Santa Monica High School, with top performances by seniors utility Kaylee Brownsberger and attacker Yen Nguyen.
The Mustangs had a slow start in the first quarter due to a lack of offence. In the second half, Costa stepped up its game, but even with multiple goals by both Brownsberger and Nguyen, the Mustangs came up short. According to Brownsberger, the team didn’t play to the best of its abilities.
“We underestimated the abilities of Santa Monica,” Brownsberger said. “By the time we stepped up our game it was too late, and we could have put more effort into the game.”
The Mustangs are currently 2-0 in Bay League and 7-6 overall. The team will face off against Peninsula in its next game on Monday at Peninsula High School. According to Brownsberger, the team is prepared for the next match.
“If we continue to work on our counter attacks we should have a good chance of winning,” Brownsberger said. “I am confident in our teams abilities and Monday’s match should be close.”
