In the third Bay League game of the year, Costa girls basketball trampled the Inglewood High School Sentinels, 64-20, in its Tuesday home game.
Costa improved its undefeated Bay League record to 3-0, led by Junior Allie Navarette’s 17 points.
“We did a great job going hard from start to finish,” Navarette. “We never let them get an opportunity to comeback.”
In the first quarter, the Mustangs came out of the gate with a 14-0 run. The Sentinels were unable to score due to the Mustangs’ persistent full- court press. The Mustangs forced over 10 turnovers, ending the first quarter 33-4.
“They had a tough time handling our full-court pressure,” coach John Lapham said. “They gave us a lot of easy opportunities because of their turnovers of the ball.”
At the start of the second quarter, the Mustangs continued to dominate all aspects of the game. However, late in the quarter, Inglewood got into a rhythm, ending the second quarter 47-14, Costa.
“The second unit did a great job getting offensive boards,” Lapham said. “We got a lot of put backs and second-chance points off of it.”
In the second half, the starters were put back in. However, the Mustangs took their foot off the gas by stopping their full-court press. Navarette led Costa with her offensive rebounds and put backs.
“We let off the high pressure defense,” sophomore Haley Herdman said. “We were working on playing solid half-court defense instead.”
In the final quarter, both team’s coaches agreed to allow the clock to run due to Costa’s 40-point plus lead. The Mustangs continued to play solid defense, ending the game 64-20.
“This year, Inglewood is in a rebuilding year,” Lapham said. “They are a young team who couldn’t figure out our defense.”
Yesterday, the Mustangs played an away game against the Morningside Monarchs, but the results were not available at the time of publication.
“Morningside plays a lot like Inglewood,” Lapham said. “We need to play our game and prepare for the game against Narbonne.”
