Making a Murderer is an incredible documentary-style TV show that tells the unbelievable true story of a Wisconsin man named Steven Avery, whose story has become one of the most controversial topics of the new year.
The ten episode show tells a story packed with conspiracy keeps the watcher glued to the screen the entire time. Making a Murderer is easily one of the most fantastic real-life TV shows, and it does an incredible job showing viewers the dark side of law enforcement by telling a remarkable, completely true story.
Filmed over a period of 10 years, the story follows Steven Avery, a man from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. In 1985, he is wrongly convicted of rape by suspicious means. After spending 18 years in prison, technology finally reaches the point of accurate DNA testing and he is released from prison after he is found to be innocent.
Avery proceeds to sue the Sheriff’s Department for $36 million in damages, but only two years after being released, Steven is arrested for murder based on interestingly placed evidence. Much of the show revolves around the happenings in the courtroom, as Avery’s lawyers try to save him from life imprisonment.
The show is quite simply incredible, with unimaginable real footage that adds so much more to the overall feel of the show. The creators fairly show each side of the argument, without favoring one side too much, and this lets the viewer form their own unbiased opinion.
Since much of the show is video from inside the courtroom during the trial, the show can get boring for someone who isn’t fascinated by courtroom trials. However, the addicting, unforeseen plot twists make up for these monotonous sequences.
The riveting and controversial story of the documentary makes it an wonderful talking point for any friends and family who also can’t stop watching. Every viewer has their own opinion as to whether Steven is guilty, and whether or not the evidence found is inciminating. These interesting points make for great debates.
While the compelling story is immersive and mesmerizing, the show contains a much deeper and underlying theme of police corruption and flaws in the justice system. Police are accused of planting evidence, and it raises the question about how fair the criminal justice system truly is.
While the story would have been outstanding as a fictional show, the fact that it is a true story with real-life footage makes it so much more outstanding to watch, and creates a sense of disbelief as the plot unravels. Knowing that it is completely true is the most shocking part of the entire show.
The characters in the show are outstanding, mainly because they are all real people, not actors. This gives a much more authentic feel to the documentary, and makes the viewer feel like they are actually there, and not next to some actor with a scripted part.
With it’s surprising twists and turns that leave the viewer speechless, Making a Murderer is a perfect example of an outstanding real-life documentary that has become one of the best and most talked about shows that Netflix has released.
Making a Murderer is rated TV-14 and is available to stream now on Netflix.
