Mira Costa’s girls basketball team was defeated by Millikan High School 68-40 in a non-conference game Monday. Despite its loss, junior forward Lauren Matoska was a bright spot in the Mustang’s offense contributing good leadership and a number of quality shots.
Despite losing by 14 points at the end of the first quarter, Costa was able to reduce the deficit going into the second half. However, a Rams scoring attack in the fourth quarter left the Mustangs unable to respond.
“It was tough being down the whole game,” junior guard Allie Navarette said. “We were taking good shots, but nothing seemed to be going in.”
The 2-0 Mustangs, now 10-6 overall, will play Inglewood High School Tuesday at home. According to Navarette, the key to success in this game will be to have better mental toughness.
“To be successful we need to have better hustle and a more stable mentality as a team,” Navarette said.
