Rugby continues undefeated record

The Mira Costa rugby team won, 38-3, in an away game against Wilson High School on Saturday.

With sophomore lock Blake Curtin and junior fullback Sean Walker both out due to injuries sustained within the last two weeks, the Mustangs were forced to move the next players  from the the second unit into the lineup with little preparation. This adjustment caused Costa’s offense to take some time before obtaining points in the first half, but Costa’s resilient defense perservered and was able to keep the Bruins from scoring.

Later in the first half, senior fly-half Justus Tavai and sophomore number eight Jonah Tavai took control of Costa’s offensive front, while lock Justin Johnson won nearly every lineout. Jonah Tavai was able to get Costa’s first seven points when he got a try. From that point forward, Mustangs’ momentum continued to spiral upward.

“We started out slow, but after that we started to play our style of rugby, which is a more agressive approach on offense,” Costa coach Duke Dulgarian said.

The win made the Mustangs overall record 3-0 and assured the Mustangs at least a number-two seed in the playoffs. The Mustangs will be playing St. John Bosco today.

“We really need to bring it next time,” senior prop Greg Boras said. “We can’t afford a slow start against Bosco they are our toughest competition.”
