The fame and fortune of well known celebrities surrounds regular people’s daily lives, but the ability to work with these famous stars is a completely different concept.
Mira Costa senior Hannah Lauson is following her passion for graphic design by interning for celebrity hairstylist Octavio Molina, who styles hair for celebrities such as Andy Grammar and Tyler Oakley. At the internship, Lauson designs the graphics he posts on all of his social media accounts and attends all his TV appearances to take pictures and provide any necessary assistance.
“She has a good eye for things, and how they should be arranged,” Lauson’s friend David Richman said. “She can tell how logos or pictures should look as to appear more professional or more appealing”
For four days twice a month, Lauson goes on her own computer and designs graphics to promote Molina’s appearances on TV shows, such as the one used to promote his appearance on KTLA.
“I don’t focus on the actual hair styling as much as I do the designing for the promotions they put it out,” Lauson said. “I mainly focus on the publicity more than anything.”
Lauson was offered this internship after Molina’s publicist, Marta Tracy saw her design skills that were shown through the designs in Lauson’s bedroom after working with Lauson’s mother, Fran Lauson.
“I love this internship,” Lauson said. “I think it’s a great experience for me to design graphics. It also gives me many opportunities to meet new people that I can make connections with for the future.”
Through the internship, Lauson has met news anchors and web design teams that have shown her how these professions function on a real life day to day basis. After an encounter with Youtube star and beauty guru, Michelle Phan’s publicist, Wendy Wong, Lauson was offered a job after college working at her company.
“This is definitely something I’d like to do in the future,” Lauson said. “It is really great to get the chance to do this internship because it really gives me a sense of knowledge and I can now know what to expect for the future.”
After taking the Introduction to Computer Science class last year, Lauson discovered her love for design. As an in class assignment, she designed an emotion recognition app for the Friendship Circle for people who can’t understand how others feel as easily. After doing so she began spending more time working in design. While in college Lauson wants to major in design.
“She always talks about pursuing design in the future, whether it be in college or as a career,” Richman said. “She is really excited to attend classes in college that can help her learn more about it.”
Lauson says she thoroughly enjoys her time spent on her internship. While working for Molina and Tracy, she has learned how to properly advertise a TV appearance.
“I really like attending Molina’s TV events,” Lauson said. “It gives me a chance to meet a lot of new people. Many of which are very successful and can potentially hire me in the future.”
