Mira Costa’s girls basketball team lost to Redondo Union Tuesday 44-34 at Redondo Union High School in the team’s fifth Bay League game of the season. Despite its loss, the Mustangs received a standout performance from junior forward Mia Finney, who made the game-tying free throw to send the game into overtime.
Costa led early in the first half, but Redondo began to claw its way back in the second quarter. At halftime, the score remained tied at 24-24. The two teams went back and forth in the second half until the Mustangs tied the game with only 17 seconds left. In overtime, the Seahawks gained a ten point lead to seal their victory.
“We did a good job on defense,” junior guard Allie Navarette said. “As a team, we were able to hold them to just a few points at each half.”
The 13-7 Mustangs, now 4-1 in Bay League, will take on Palos Verdes High School at home Friday in their sixth Bay League game of the season. According to Navarette, the Mustangs will have to play better offensively if they hope to be successful against future opponents.
“We need to do better on offense, by getting easier shots and not relying so much on our defense to keep us in the game,” Navarette said.
