Mira Costa’s girls basketball team defeated Peninsula High School 39-31 away Tuesday in its seventh Bay League game of the season. The Mustangs received a standout performance from sophomore guard Haley Herdman who contributed two key shots in the first half, helping them gain the lead.
Costa was able to control the first quarter, holding the panthers to just two points. In the second half however, Peninsula fought back, scoring 17 points to the Mustangs’ 23. A strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter kept Peninsula from gaining the lead and insured Costa’s victory.
“The entire game our team did a good job hustling on loose balls and pushing the other team,” junior forward Mia Finney said.
The 15-7 Mustangs, now 6-1 in Bay League, will take on Inglewood at its home gym Friday at 6 p.m. According to Finney, Costa will have to improve on offense and defense in order to continue being successful.
“I think we really need to improve on boxing out on both ends and running our offense the way we should,” Finney said.
