Mira Costa’s girls water polo team lost to Carlsbad High School 11-7 in a non-conference game Thursday in the Irvine Southern California Champions tournament, with top performances by seniors utility Kaylee Brownsberger and goalie Marisa Catella.
The Mustangs had a slow start in the first half 6-3 due to a lack of defense. In the second half, Costa continued to fall behind and even with two goals by Brownsberger a goal by Aminadi Anorve, Costa lost to Carlsbad. According to Catella, the team could have played stronger.
“We didn’t play to the best of our abilities, and our defense was lacking,” Catella said. “We lacked momentum and the game could have gone much better.”
The Mustangs are currently 4-1 in Bay League and 13-10 overall. The team will next playa gainst in the Irvine Southern California Champions tournament at the Irvine Dive Pool on Friday. According to Catella, the team is expecting to play better tomorrow.
“Today was an off day, and I know we could have played better,” Catella said. “I am confident that our team can bounce back and be victorious in the next game.”
