Mira Costa Wrestling beat Redondo Union High School at home 60-7 on Tuesday with 5 matches won and many other matches won by forfeit. With this win Costa is now first in Bay League going into CIF playoffs.
Senior Niilo Niemi won his match 13-0 in the 197th weight class to finish off the meet for Costa and get the team ready to compete for CIF. According to Niemi his match was won by being prepared physically and mentally for the meet.
“I made him play my game and didn’t give him the opportunity to do what he wanted,” Niemi said. “Throughout the match I was able to outlast him and when he got tired that was when I started to get aggressive and put pressure him.”
Costa is next playing in CIF playoffs at Redondo Beach High School and is competing to be CIF champions two years in a row. According to junior Brendan Brady the team is preparing hard for CIF with constant practice and conditioning.
“For the playoffs each team are ranked in CIF and that determines who you play,” Brady said. “We are ranked third, and it works like a tournament see who wins.”
