Mira Costa’s girls water polo team defeated Long Beach Poly High School 9-7 and Edison High School 6-5 in the Irvine Southern California Champions tournament at the Irvine Dive Pool on Friday, with top performances by senior attacker Yen Nguyen and junior attacker Aminadi Anorve.
The Mustangs were determined to win and were leading 6-4 to Long Beach Poly and 3-2 to Edison in the first half. In the second half, Costa kept up the fast pace and with three goals by Anorve one goal by Anorve, Costa defeated its opponents. According to Nguyen the team really excelled.
“We played teams that were way above our level, so it was exciting to come out on top,” Nguyen said. “Long Beach Poly is a Division one team, so we had to play to the best of our abilities to win.”
The Mustangs are currently 4-1 in Bay League and 15-9 overall. The team will next play in the third day of the Irvine Southern California Champions tournament at the Irvine Dive Pool on Saturday. According to Nguyen, the team hopes to continue its win streak in the tournament.
“We have become a very competitive team, and I have high hopes for us,” Nguyen said. “If we perform at the same level as today we should give the other teams a run for their money.”
