Mira Costa senior Miriam Sachs won the Los Angeles County Poetry Out Loud Competition on Feb. 4 at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts with her performance of “The Gaffe,” by C.K. Williams, and “Make a Law So That the Spine Remembers Wings,” by Larry Levis.
Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest in which contestants memorize and recite two poems from the Poetry Out Loud online anthology, a list of poems for contestants to choose from. Sachs will now advance to the state level competition, which will take place on Feb. 28 and 29 in Sacramento, California. The winner will then compete at the national competition in Washington, D. C. where one high school student will be announced as the winner of Poetry Out Loud and is awarded a scholarship as a prize.
“It feels amazing,” Sachs said. “I’m just really excited for the opportunity. I would love to keep performing and doing poetry because I absolutely love it. I am always writing because that’s just who I am and I don’t know how not to.”
