Mira Costa’s girls water polo lost to Warren High School 8-7 in a non-conference game on Feb. 12 at Downey High School, with top performances from senior attacker Yen Nguyen and goalie Marissa Catella.

The Mustangs were behind in the first half 4-3 due to strong competition. In the second half, Costa fought back and even with two goals by Nguyen and many blocks by Catella, Costa fell behind. According to Catella, the team played to the best of its capabilities.

“The competition was very strong and we just played as best as we could,” Catella said. “Our defense lacked at times, but overall our performance was strong.”

The Mustangs are currently 16-12 overall. The team’s will next play is in the sixteenth round of the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs (CIF) on Feb. 17 against Santa Maria High School. According to Catella, the team has prepared well for CIF.

“We have improved so much this season and I have high hopes for us this season,” Catella said. “We have the mindset to win and I think we can do great in Wednesday’s match.”
