Mira Costa’s girls soccer team defeated Valencia High School 3-2, in the first round of California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). The Mustangs scored in the last three minutes of the game to preserve their victory and advance to the round of 16.
The Mustangs first goal, by senior Kendall Douglass, was scored midway through the first half. Later in the first half, junior Viviana Villacorte scored going into halftime. In the final minutes in the game, junior Emelie Flaig was able to help the Mustangs prevail. According to Douglass, the team was nervous in the beginning but was able to find their rhythm by the end.
“Emotions ran very high along with the nerves from our players, knowing that it is our first CIF game,” Douglass said. “All in all, the team overcame their nerves and did what we needed to do to play well throughout the game.”
With the first win of CIF, the Mustang’s overall falls to 15-1-5. The team’s next CIF game is away against Newbury Park High School on Tuesday where the Mustangs hope to further continue their playoff winning streak. According to Villacorte, the team started playing well together even though it took all year and they hope to keep it up.
“It took all season to play the way we did yesterday, and it was great,” Villacorte said. “I feel that if we can keep our focus and the intensity from yesterday’s game, we can continue to advance in CIF.”
