Costa freshman Gabi Dinsdale is part of a program called Precision Fencing Club in Torrance. She started playing 5 years ago and was first interested in it when a her mother’s best friend recommended it to her.

“When I first started fencing, it was kind of confusing and hard but the more I practiced and learned, the better I got,” Dinsdale said, “It also became more enjoyable and fun.”

Every year Dinsdale and her team travels to different places to compete for Nationals after winning many competitions. This year, they will attend Nationals in Dallas, Texas during the summer. In previous years they have gone to San Jose, Kentucky, Ohio, and Oregon.

“When my team and I travel for Nationals, it is a really fun experience because I get to meet and compete against new people,” Dinsdale said, “We plan on trying our hardest to win this year though.”

Dinsdale practices two to three times a week usually from 6:30-9 p.m. at Precision Fencing Club in Torrance. They practice footwork, lunging, and basic workout routines.

“During practice we work really hard and try our best because we want to become better to try and win Nationals,” Dinsdale said, “It’s also really fun when we get to go against each other see each other’s techniques and footwork.”

Dinsdale plans on attending college for fencing but does not think she will pursue it as a job or career after that. She does plan on playing it for fun as a hobby.

“I love fencing because it is different than every other sport,” Dinsdale said, “I also really like to see people’s expressions when I tell them I fence because they are always surprised.”
