Mira Costa’s girls basketball team defeated Diamond Bar High School, 47-33, at home on Wednesday in the California Interscholastic Federation quarterfinals.
In the first quarter, Costa got off to a strong start, with an eight-point lead. However, in the second quarter, the Brahmans made back-to-back three-pointers, ending the half 20-16.
“In the first quarter, we were extremely motivated to get ahead of them,” sophomore guard Haley Herdman said.
However, in the second half, Costa regained momentum that held the Brahmans back in the game, and they were able to gain a 13-point lead.
“After halftime, we tried to make sure our players would continue to play confidently,” coach John Lapham said.
On defense, the Mustangs utilized their height down low. Junior guard Halle Maeda diverted many drives away from the basket, forcing the Brahmans to settle for outside shots. Junior forward Allie Navarette got a total of six rebounds while on defense and was also able to put up 13 points throughout the game.
“We knew going into the game that we would have to stop their shooters; our team did this by guarding the perimeter and hedging screens especially hard,” Lapham said.
The Mustangs now have an overall record of 21-8 and finished 8-2 in Bay League. The team will face Burroughs High School in the semifinals of CIF playoffs at 7 p.m. at home on Saturday.
“We made some mistakes, but played hard,” Lapham said. “On our best days, I believe we can compete with anyone.”
