A 1-0 loss in the Mustangs’ home game against Martin Luther King High School on Feb. 19 stopped the Mustangs, ending their run at CIF in the first round.
Costa started off playing aggressively, as it moved the ball up the field quickly. However, Martin Luther pulled ahead, 1-0, midway through the first half when it scored off of a free kick that resulted from a foul by Costa.
“At the start, it looked like we were going to dominate, but we were unlucky,” senior goalkeeper Justin Fairchild said.
Costa’s offense was able to create multiple scoring opportunities during the remainder of the first half by sending the ball up the line but still trailed, 1-0, as the offensive was unable to complete the opportunities.
“We did a good job controlling most of the half and only allowed a few opportunities for the other team,” senior Adrian Caldevilla said.
In the end of the second half, the game continued, but the boys could not find a rhythm and struggled to connect their passes and control the ball.
“It was a tough loss,” coach Gary Smith said. “We were the better team and outplayed them, but we just couldn’t score.”
Costa ended its season 13-6-2 overall and 6-3-1 in league. This was the last high school game for 18 seniors players.
“The playoffs were kind of disappointing, but all in all we had a great season,” Smith said.
