Seniors commit on Winter Signing Day

Mira Costa seniors officially committed in the Mustang Mall on Feb. 3 during this year’s second National Signing Day. The commitments included ten athletes from sports including boys and girls soccer, boys volleyball, girls golf and baseball. The school year’s first National Signing took place on Nov. 12 when 19 athletes signed.

Hanna Watkins
Watkins signed with the University of Chicago not only for the Division III athletics, but for its academics as well. Watkins has played for Mira Costa varsity soccer for four years and plays center midfield. She also played on the SoCal Blues ECNL soccer team.

Sam Hefter
Hefter signed with the University of Pennsylvania to play men’s soccer, after verbally committing in Feburary of last year. Alhough he does not play for Mira Costa’s soccer program, he currently plays for the Real Southern California Academy soccer team.

Andrea Lee
Lee, ranked No. 16 in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking, will attend Stanford University. Lee led the Costa girls golf team to the State Championship this year, was named the 2015 Daily Breeze Player of the Year and hopes to play in the Ladies Professional Golf Association.

Sam Jones
Jones, a libero for Mira Costa boys volleyball, signed to play Divison I volleyball at the University of California, Los Angeles. Jones was the defensive player of the year for Costa’s varsity team his junior year and verbally committed to the university on Dec. 13 of last year.

Zack Chan
After playing all four years at many different positions on Costa’s varsity baseball team, Chan will be playing second base for the University of Hawaii next year. Chan hopes to be an immediate asset to the team and to be a starter during his freshman year.

Rob Mullahey
Mullahey, a recent transfer student from Mira Costa’s rival, Loyola High School, committed to play Divison I volleyball at Pepperdine University next year on Feb. 3 in the Mustang Mall for National Signing Day. Mullahey plans to major in business at Pepperdine.

Marni Murez
After finishing her fourth year on Mira Costa’s varsity golf team with a California State Championship, Murez is ready to take her game to Division I golf at Boston College. Murez chose Boston College because of the academic rigor and quality women’s golf coaching staff.

Justin Johnson
After playing rugby for three years, Johnson committed to Penn State University. Johnson played for the Los Angeles rugby club team, several all-star teams and Costa’s rugby team. Johnson is looking forward to playing at a higher level and getting a feel for the East Coast.

Justin Fairchild
Mira Costa’s boys soccer captain and goalkeeper, Fairchild committed to the California State University of Dominguez Hills after verbally committing the week prior. Along with playing on the CSUDH Division II, nationally-ranked team, Fairchild plans to pursue his interest in biology next year.

Cameron Alexander
Mira Costa football’s defensive end, Alexander signed to play football at San Jose State University at Mira Costa’s Signing Day. SJSU is a Division I football school. This year was Alexander’s second season on the varsity team at Costa, after playing on Costa’s frosh-soph as a freshman and junior varisty as a sophomore.
