The Mira Costa Drama Department held its 8th Annual Aids Benefit show on Feb 9 in the new theatre to raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, an organization which raises money to research both Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
Costa students performed in the show which consisted of 20 skits, songs, monologues, scenes and dances that they each put together themselves. Drama President Dana Beech, Vice President Madeleine Huggins and Event Coordinator Molly Dvorkin oversaw the auditions on Feb 3 and chose which performances would be in the show.
“Organizing this event took time and communication,” Beech said. “We needed to make sure that everyone was working together and that our performers and tech crew was prepared to properly execute the show.”
According to Dvorkin, students participated in a dress rehearsal on Feb 8, in order to run through the entire show. In addition to the dress rehearsal, students were responsible for rehearsing their acts on their own time.
“This show was a lot of work for the performers to have their acts prepared and the tech crew members who had to make sure the programs were ready and that their behind the scenes duties were completed,” Dvorkin said. “We tried to get everyone involved as much as we can.”
According to Dvorkin, the performers all wore black and red. There was a big closing number where all of the performers came out, linked arms and bowed in unison to congratulate each other on the show.
“This event gave the students an opportunity to show their talent by having the choice to act any type of skit they chose, Dvorkin said.”
Tickets were sold at the door for $5 and several audience members gave additional donations for the cause. The drama department raised a total of $500 and approximately 100 tickets were sold.
“I love how people from every art department at Costa came together to put on a wonderful, fun performance that raises awareness for such a worthy cause”, Huggins said.
