After holding auditions on Jan. 25 and 26, the Mira Costa Associated Student Body has begun preparations for the annual talent show, which will take place tonight at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.
At the auditions, a panel of 15 ASB members chose a total of 20 acts to perform during the talent show. Students could sign up in the ASB room weeks prior to the audition dates. Performers could audition with a solo or group in different categories such as singing and dancing.
“I think [the auditions] went well,” Senior Class Treasurer senior Marisa Catella said. “They allowed us to pick a wide range of different talents to perform in the show as well as pick the best performers in each category.”
Catella along with the other senior class officers Olivia Everhard and Sam Jones, will serve as the masters of ceremony for the show. In the weeks leading up to the show, they worked together to write their transitions and figure out how the show will run and come together.
“[The masters of ceremony] get together to schedule the show so it flows nicely and there aren’t too many of the same acts in a row,” Senior Class President senior Sam Jones said. “We typically comment on the previous act and lead into the next one and try to make our speeches as funny and witty as possible.”
During the talent show, a panel of faculty members will judge each act and ultimately decide on a winner. According to Jones, these judges are chosen based on past experience with the talent show and enthusiasm to participate.
“The judges during the show are mainly looking for confidence,” Auxiliary of Entertainment junior Molly Shea said. “They don’t want to see someone that is really nervous and holding themselves back. They want people that are giving their everything and trying their best.”
Costa students can audition with a solo act, or in a group. While students usually submit a song or dance, they can audition with any talent they choose.
“I decided to audition for the talent show because I love performing in front of people,” Costa junior Gabby Franco said. “ [The talent show] is the perfect opportunity to collaborate with other students while doing something that we all enjoy.”
According to Shea, ASB has been encouraging student participation in the talent show by putting up signs around campus to spread the information around Costa. Talent show tickets are will be on sale tonight for $6 at the door.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the different acts and how they perform the night of the talent show,” Catella said. “The talent show is important because it gives Costa students a chance to showcase their talents to the rest of the student body along with others who decide to come to the show,”
