Mira Costa’s baseball team had a double header against West High School to start its season on Saturday. The Mustangs lost the first game 5-2 but won the second 12-2 with solid pitching and batting from sophomore Jesse Storey and senior Reese Alexiades.
In the two games, Storey pitched six innings and only allowed two hits while also striking out seven batters. On the batting side, Alexiades had three hits and 4 runs. According to Alexiades, the team hit the ball really well all day but were unable to get the result they hoped for in the early game.
“We hit the ball well as a team and came up clutch in the right situations to put points up on the board,” Alexiades said. “We had solid contact the whole day, but were unfortunate to come up short in the first game.”
The Mustangs will start out their season with a record of 1-1. The team plays their next game in the El Segundo High School tournament on Friday, against an undetermined opponent. According to Storey, the team will has some tough opponents in this upcoming tournament, but if Costa plays well as a team, the team can fulfill its goals.
“We have a tough schedule, and most likely also in our tournament this year with going up against some really good schools,” Storey said. “It will be important to play together as a team if we want to come away away from this season with a successful record.”
