Few people are able to publish original musical work during their high school careers. Costa freshman Jesse Eads, a bass player, got to do just that.

A music video called “A New Day” was released January 22nd by Redondo High Junior Tyler Colt, in which Eads plays the bass guitar. Eads has been in two of Colt’s music videos, “A New Day” being the latest. Colt met Eads because he needed to get backup musicians for his gig at the RUHS homecoming, and Eads was one of the people who did backup for him.

“As of right now, I am a solo artist, but I love playing with Jesse and he is a great musician,” Colt said. “So later on, if I ever need a band, just like I did for the RUHS gig, he would be the person I would go for.”

Besides Eads, Colt allowed two other Costa musicians of Eads’s choice to also be in the video. Freshman Max Huggins is a guitar player, and Junior Kip Ambrose is a percussionist. Both boys met Jesse in Costa’s first semester Jazz 1 course, and they all became fast friends.

“The making of the music video really helped develop my friendship with Jesse and it helped me to meet new people like Kip,” Huggins said.

However, under all of the glory and happiness the experience has given Eads and the others, some things are not what they seem. Ambrose, Eads, and Huggins are not actually part of Colt’s band. In fact, Colt is a solo artist. However, Eads has put a positive spin on this reality.

“I don’t mind that I’m not getting paid and am not technically part of Tyler’s music because it’s all about the experience,” Eads said. “It’s all about the process of becoming a stage person, a performing personality, that matters to me.”

Colt is just using fellow musicians as actors in his music videos. Eads and the others do not actually play their instruments’ parts on the actual recordings of Colt’s songs. On the actual songs, Colt has studio engineers who play the instruments he needs. However, he still wanted to use Eads in his videos.

“Making music videos with one person as the main subject gets boring. Since I needed a band in the video anyway, and I’ve played with Jesse and like him as a musician and a person, why not?” Colt said.

Eads, on top of playing bass in the videos, was technically an actor, playing the part of a member of Colt’s “band.” He even has a few lines in the first music video Colt and Eads made together, “Look At Me,” in which he declared he is “pumped” for their performance.

“I think it’s great! It gives Jesse a sense of what it’s like to be in entertainment, something he might want to pursue,” Eads´s mother, Lulu Eads, said.

According to Eads, he wants to pursue his bass playing as a career and work as a studio artist, which is very similar to what he did for Colt. Eads looks forward to working with Colt in the future but does now know of any set plans for new videos or songs.

“I’m just planning on getting whatever job I can get, as long as it has to do with my bass playing, of course,” Eads said. “I love what I did with Tyler and am optimistic about my plans for the future.”
