Mira Costa’s boys lacrosse team opened up its season with a loss to Santiago, 8-6, in a non-conference game at Santiago High School on Monday, with top performances from senior attacker Nash Hale, who scored two goals.
Santiago remained in the lead throughout the entire game. At halftime, Costa was down 4-3. Due to a lack of defense, Costa fell further behind in the third quarter, which ended 8-4. The Mustangs tried to make a comeback, but it was too late. According to Hale, the team needs to get off to a better start by having a stronger offense from the beginning.
“We had a tough time working our offense well, and we were playing from behind the rest of the game,” Hale said. “We couldn’t pull through in the end because they capitalized in transition and played good defense.”
The Mustangs, now 0-1 overall, will next face off against Crespi at home on Thursday at 7 p.m. According to senior midfielder Zane Crandall, the boys will be preparing for the next game by working on the fundamentals to round out the team.
“We should come out on top of Crespi if we execute what we practice every day,” Crandall said.
