Mira Costa’s badminton team lost to Long Beach Poly 19-18 and defeated Cerritos 18-9 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club during a tournament, on Friday and Saturday, with senior Yoshi Cohn and junior Sam Schwartz both taking first in their events.
Overall, the team placed second behind Long Beach Poly and ahead of Cerritos. Freshman Lulu Yu placed second in girl’s singles, freshman Jay Cohn and senior Jay Meng placed third in boy’s doubles, and senior Shirleen Chen and sophomore Audrey Kim placed third in girl’s doubles. According to Schwartz, the team played well against Long Beach.
“Long Beach Poly is a very good team which has many admirable foes,” Schwartz said. “I think our whole team did their best and fought hard.”
Costa is currently 0-1 overall. They will next play Long Beach Poly on Tuesday at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. According to coach David Levin, the team needs to work on mixed doubles before the match.
“Our mixed doubles have to be improved if we want to play in California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) this year,” Levin said.
