Mira Costa’s baseball team faced off against Peninsula High School on Thursday in the semi-finals of the El Segundo High School Tournament. The matchup took place at Costa’s own Osterhaus field, and the Mustangs defeated the Panthers 10-0.
The Mustangs were able to dominate all seven innings by using aggressive offense according to sophomore pitcher Chris Penna. The Mustangs leading scorers were junior pitcher Matt Beserra, and senior pitcher Trevor Franklin who each had two runs. On defense sophomore Jessie Storey pitched four of the Mustangs seven innings, and was able to strike out two batters. And according to Franklin the Mustangs were playing as a unit and had a great game.
“It’s really exciting to see the team play so well, and to see so many people on the team contributing to our success as we move into the tournament finals,” Franklin said.
The Mustangs will now move on to play in the El Segundo Tournament finals on Saturday against Bellflower High School at a location that is not yet determined. Due to their win the Mustangs now have an overall record of 5-0 and according to Penna they are feeling confident going into the finals.
“We played Bellflower in the summer and it was a close game but we took the win,” Penna said. “They are a talented team but I believe that if we play hard we will take the win.”
