Mira Costa’s baseball team faced off against Bellflower High School in the championship game of the El Segundo Tournament on Saturday. The game was played at a neutral field and the Mustangs were able to trample the Buccaneers 4-1, giving them the tournament victory.
In the game, senior second baseman Zack Chan was able to score two of the Mustangs runs while the other two came from senior shortstop Will Proctor, and junior third baseman Matt Baserra. On defense, senior pitcher Trevor Franklin pitched six of the seven innings and was able to strikeout nine batters. According to Franklin, playing as a unit helped the team earn the win.
“The game was a true team win,” Franklin said. “We had a lot of effort and a crisp defense day by our whole team.”
The Mustangs, now 7-1 overall, and will play a non-league away game versus Culver City High School on Friday. According to Franklin it is going to be a challenging game that the Mustangs are looking forward to.
“Culver will be a really tough team to beat,” Franklin said. “We are going to try and carry our momentum from the tournament and turn it into a great week of practice and hopefully a big win on Friday.”
