Mira Costa’s badminton team won against Long Beach Poly 12-9 on Tuesday at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club with wins from senior Yoshi Cohn and junior Sam Schwartz in girl’s and boy’s singles, respectively.
Cohn won one of her two games in girl’s singles, freshman Lulu Yu won one of her two games in girl’s singles, and Schwartz won all of his games in boy’s singles. Sophomores Scarlett Luo and Audrey Mei won one of their two games in girl’s doubles, Schwartz and Cohn won in mixed doubles, and Yu and junior Nathan Trinh won their one game in mixed doubles. According to freshman Kelly Trinh, the team felt good about the victory, considering their loss to Long Beach at the previous tournament.
“Today we did our best to beat Long Beach,” Trinh said. “I’m really proud of the effort we put in to defeating them, because they are one of the toughest teams to compete against.”
The team’s record is currently 1-1 overall. They will next play Cabrillo High School on Tuesday at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. According to Schwartz, the team needs to keep working hard if they want to do well at the game next week.
“If we continue playing as a team we will be able to beat any team in CIF,” Schwartz said. “So in preparation for Tuesday’s match, I feel we need to come out with the same enthusiasm as we did today.”
