Mira Costa’s track and field competed in the Nike Invitational meet on Friday night at Redondo Union with top performances from junior Matthew Arruda, senior Alexis Johnson and sophomore Jonah Tavai, who were the highest-placing Costa athletes at the meet.
Arruda placed 59th in the boys 3200 meter race with a time of 10:15.31. Johnson placed 28th in the girls 3200 meter race with a time of 11:57.41. Tavai placed 6th in the boys 12 lbs shot-put with 48-00.00. Johnson said she was happy with the outcome of the team’s results.
“We competed well and placed well as a team today,” Johnson said. “I was not personally happy with my time, but the outlook for tomorrow is positive.”
The Mustangs will compete Saturday in the second day of the Nike Invitational. According to senior Ethan Williams, the Nike Invitational is one of the largest meets of the year.
“It is important that we set our goals here,” Williams said. “If we do well, it is going to set the bar much higher for the remainder of the year. This is a big meet and we want to do well.”
