Mira Costa’s track team competed in the 800-meter, 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter events in the annual Azusa Meet of Champions Saturday in Azusa.

In the 1,600-meter event, junior Michael Yaskowitz started out his race behind the pack but caught up on the straight aways, pushing up to the front by the end, placing eigth overall with a time of 4:19.94 minutes.

“I worked on using the least amount of energy in the beginning so I could use it up on the straight aways,” Yaskowitz said.

The final event was the 3,200-meter race. Junior Melia Chittenden stayed in the middle of the pack for the majority of the race and edged closer toward the front on the final lap, placing 15th overall with a time of 10:59.78 minutes.

“I started to use one of our coach’s strategies, which was to wait in the very back of the pack until the leader made her move and speed up,” senior Chittenden said. “This proved to be effective and helped me pass the competition.”

The Mustangs will next compete in the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Legends meet at UCLA’s Drake Stadium today and Saturday. Both collegiate and high school athletes will be competing at the meet.

“The team will get to watch the collegiate runners compete, which is always inspiring,” track and field coach Roberto Calderon said. “We also can use this opportunity for our times to improve for larger meets.”
