Mira Costa’s baseball team defeated the Damien High School Spartans 1-0 at Mater Dei High School on Tuesday in a non-conference game. The game remained scoreless until junior Matt Besera was brought home to put the Mustangs on the scoreboard.

Besera had two hits in three at bats and also scored the game winning run. According to Besera, the team played well again and he feels he did what it took to help the Mustangs gain the lead.

“Today I felt like I played really well and I didn’t try and do too much,” Besera said. “I just stuck to my approach and did everything I could to help get the win for our team.”

The Mustangs’ now 8-1 overall continue their seven game winning streak alive. The team starts the Bora Classic Tournament on Wednesday and will face an undetermined opponent at Mater Dei High School.  According to Besera, if the team can stay focused on its game throughout its entirety, they will be able to win, regardless the opponent.

“Our team mentality going into this game it to just stick to our plan and try not to overcomplicate things,” Besera said. “As long as we  keep the intensity high and mentally stay in the game from first pitch till the last out, we can pull out with a win.”
