After a close loss last week to Palos Verdes High, Mira Costa’s boys volleyball team bounced back as it faced  Peninsula High School Tuesday at home.

The Mustangs swept the Panthers in three games, with the help of senior outside Roy McFarland and opposite Jackson Wedbush’s powerful hits. Costa is now 9-2 overall and 1-1 in Bay League.

“Today was a good game for us, and it gave everybody a chance to get involved,” senior libero Sam Jones said.

Costa dominated in the first game, with kills from McFarland and Wedbush, ending the game 25-14.

“Today was also good because it gave everyone even more experience and confidence, which helps build our team up for California Interscholastic Federation,” Jones said.

The Mustangs took the second game, 25-20, as the Panthers put together a stronger effort, converting on their attacks.  However, the Panthers’ rally was thwarted by the Mustangs’ defense.

“Peninsula is a solid team,” senior setter Rob Mullahey said “They almost came back in the second game due to some mistakes from us and their offense, but we did a good job of stopping the rebuttal.”

In the third set, the Panthers’ defense was unable to keep up with the Mustangs’ offense, as Costa more than doubled the Panthers’ score. The game ended, 25-12, in the last match.

“League games like this are a great chance for us to establish ourselves and be the team we want to be. That is exactly what we did in today’s game,” Jones said.

The Mustangs played yesterday against Inglewood High School at home, but the results were unavailable at the time of publication. Next week, the team will travel to Hawaii to compete in the Clash of the Titans Tournament that will occur over Spring break at Punahou High School in Maui.

“This win today was a good test before we play in the Clash of the Titans Tourament in Hawaii,” Mullahey said.
