Mira Costa’s boys lacrosse defeated Peninsula 9-8 at home on Tuesday in its first Bay League game of the season. It went into overtime, with junior middle Casey Bonner scoring two goals, one of which was the game winning goal.
Peninsula had the 3-2 lead at halftime, with Costa trailing behind until the very end of the last quarter. With 32 seconds left in the game, junior attacker Ryan Gustafson passed to junior Chad Coons scored to tie the game, allowing Costa to win it overtime.
“I think the win was really important to us, considering that the last two years we weren’t able to convert,” Bonner said. “I think that it was the best game we’ve played all year, in terms of cohesiveness and playing hard from the first to the final whistle.”
The Mustangs, now 10-3 overall and 1-0 in Bay League, will next play crosstown rival Redondo on Friday at home at 7 p.m. According to sophomore Zach Horowitz, if the team continues having a solid defense and an active offense, Costa will do well.
“Redondo is not as good as Peninsula, but we can’t take them lightly,” Horowitz said. “I think we need to come out just like we did on Friday to come home with a win.”
