Mira Costa’s softball team defeated Peninsula 6-5 at home on Friday, with senior Elliott Estes’ solid pitches, and freshman shortstop Morgan Ingham leading the team to a victory.
The Mustangs defeated the Panthers after they struggled to come up in the fifth inning. Quick passes between sophomore Serena Ponciano and junior first base Emily Eudy got Peninsula players out, but got the Mustang’s were still losing 5-4..
“We had a good start, and when we fell behind we had good offensive energy to help bring us back into the game.” Estes said. “My middle infielders really helped me.”
In the last inning, Eudy and Ponciano ran after junior first base Veronica Chaidez hit the ball into the outfield. The Mustang’s ran hard while the Panthers struggled to get the ball to the diamond, and both girls passed the home plate, putting the final socre at 6-5.
“Being the last person up to bat was really scary, especially since we were low on time.” Chaidez said. “Being able to hit the ball and get the runner in was awesome, and it boosted our confidence a lot.”
The Mustangs next play Inglewood on Friday at home. Their Bay League record is 1-1, and their overall record is 5-8. According to sophomore Grace Heron, girls softball needs to up their offensive power before playing Inglewood.
“We’re gonna work on faster pitching and getting around the ball better.” Heron said. “We have great defense and all we need to work on is great offense for the next game.”
