Mira Costa’s track and field competed in the Arcadia Invitational on April 8 at Arcadia High School in the invitational, open and seeded categories. The athletes had to earn qualifying times previously in order to compete.
For the invitational races, juniors Caleb Llorin and Michael Yaskowitz, and seniors Ethan Williams and Ty Garrett placed 21st in the 4×1600 meter and Llorin, Garrett, Yaskowitz and senior Brenton Westbrook placed 23rd in the DMR 1200-400-800-1600. Sophomores Aaliyah Graves and Jaylah Herron, junior Shante Robinson, and senior Myan Elrington placed fifth in the 4×100 meter relay for the girls. According to Garrett, the team reached their expectations and goals.
“Though we were disappointed to not beat West Torrance in our 4×1600, we were where we wanted to be,” Garrett said. “We beat the Costa record for our category by 15 seconds, so that made us feel better about the race.”
The Mustangs next competed in the Mustang Speed Invitational at home on April 16. According to Garrett, this is an opportunity for the team to go up against some Bay League schools as well as others around this area.
“It is always a postitive thing to compete against schools around us,” Garrett said. “It allows us to relax while at the same time push ourselves and our times, as well as some friendly competition.”
