Mira Costa’s track and field team competed in the South Bay Championships on Saturday at West Torrance High School where the girls placed first overall with a score of 92.5, while the boys placed third with a score of 53.
Juniors Melia Chittenden, Emily Jones and Shante Robinson all placed first in their respective events. Chittenden won the 1,600-meter race, Jones won the 800-meter race and Robinson won the 100-meter hurdles.
“I’m really happy with how I raced, and I hope that I will continue improving throughout the season,” Chittenden said.
Junior Michael Yaskowitz placed first for the boys in the 3,200-meter race. Yaskowitz had a strong start and placed himself in the front of the pack. He continue to lead the pack, finishing at 9.35.68 minutes.
“Overall, I think the team did fairly well,” Yaskowitz said. “One thing we need to improve on is knowing our strengths and weaknesses and using our abilities to position ourselves to win.”
The Mustangs, 3-0 in Bay League, will take on Redondo Union today at 2:45 p.m. at home. In Bay League, Costa is ranked above the Seahawks in 12 events and is ranked below them in six.
“Our team is ready to face Redondo,” Yaskowitz said. “As long as we place our runners in their strongest events, we should be able to come out on top.”
