The Mira Costa softball team’s hard work throughout the season culminated in the second round of CIF Southern Section playoffs.

The game was a surefire dogfight, and as expected, it came down to the wire. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, they came out on the wrong side of the dust.

The Mustangs took on the Redlands Terriers on May 25 at Marine West field. The final score was 6-3, with Redlands scoring three runs in the seventh inning. Freshman right fielder Taylor Glover showed her skills in the game, hitting a three-run triple.

This loss marks the end of the Mustangs’ CIF run and right now, all they can do is prepare for the next season.

“I think overall, our defense really improved throughout the season, and in reality there is not much we have to change,” sophomore left fielder Meghan Von Behren said.

In the first inning, the Redland Terriers scored on an error and base hit. The Mustangs went down uneventfully, not getting anyone on base.

“We took a while to get going, but when we did, we really started hitting our stride,” coach Dick Amberik said.

Costa failed to score in the second inning as well, with three batters going up and three going down. In the field, sophomore catcher Katie Saunders made a beautiful throw down to second base to stop the stealing runner.

“I knew it was a crucial out, and I gunned it down there,” Saunders said.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, down 3-0, the Mustangs managed to put together three runs with bases- loaded triple from Glover.

In the seventh inning, Redlands scored three runs on a bases-loaded single and error. This left the Mustangs in a deep hole, out of which they could not climb out of. The Mustangs did not come back from their deficit, and the final score was 6-3, Redlands.

“I believe that had we made it through the seventh inning without giving up all of those runs, we would have won that game. The best part of our batting order was coming up,” Amberik said.
