Mira Costa’s swim team earned the Bay League title after competing in the Bay League finals on Thursday at home against Peninsula, Palos Verdes, and Redondo. Costa won with a combined score of 992, but individually the girls placed first at 522 and the boys placed second at 470 behind Peninsula at 503. Top performers for the Mustangs included freshman Riley Farrell and senior Ian Campbell.
Farrell placed first in the 200 individual medley at 2:09.58, improving upon her time from the preliminaries by about four seconds. Farrell, junior Lauren Nielsen, junior Katie Barnhill, and sophomore Sophie Kuehler placed first in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing at 1:40.87, breaking the league record of 1:40.96. Campbell placed first in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle, finishing at 48.35 and 22.56 respectively. According to senior Matt Woicik, finals went quite well.
“The girls won, and even though the guys lost, it was the closest that we’ve come to winning since I’ve been here, so overall I’m very happy with our teams performance,” Woicik said.
The girls are currently undefeated at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in Bay League, while the boys are 5-3 overall and 2-2 in Bay League. The next meet is the California Interscholastic Federation(CIF) preliminaries on May 13 in Riverside. According to freshman Alexandra Crisera, even though she couldn’t participate in the finals, she has high expectations for CIF.
“We have a good amount of people going to CIF this year and I think we’ll make a pretty good showing there,” Crisera said.
