Mira Costa’s girl lacrosse team ends it season early in the first round of California Interscholastic Federation playoffs.
The Mustangs lost 10-7 in a tough game against Thousand Oaks. The team had top performances from sophomore Charlie Manley, junior Kelli Mark, and senior Kayla Sugimoto.
The Mustangs started off the first half strong with three goals in the beginning of the game. The Mustangs were able to create long possessions and keep the ball on the their side of the field for the majority of first half. Costa was able to slowly score three more goals towards the end of the first half. On the opposite side of the ball the Mustangs allowed Thousand Oaks to score six goals.
“Our offense had great momentum in the first half,” said Manley. “We were able to execute and stay tied with Thousand Oaks.”
Throughout the second half the Mustangs struggled to keep the ball and maintain long possessions. The Mustangs were only able to score only one goal during the second half. The Mustangs struggled and wasn’t able to overcome Thousand Oaks’ defense. The team’s defense wasn’t to keep up with Thousand Oaks’ offense and allowed four more goals by the end of the game.
“We couldn’t get into a grove where we could have a possession,” said Sugimoto. “Leaving us to fall behind and not being able to keep up with Thousand Oaks.”
The Mustangs ended their season 4-4 in Bay League and tied for second with Palos Verdes and Peninsula, and went 8-10 overall this season. According to Sugimoto, they team played well this season.
“I’m proud of how we came out this season,” said Sugimoto. “We played hard and made improvements in our program and I’m proud of how we have became a big threat in bay league.”
