After coming off a tough loss against Huntington Beach to end their season, the Mustangs boys volleyball team rebounded with a big first round win in California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs, sweeping Northwood High School 3-0. The Mustangs were dominant throughout each set and easily proved that they were the best team on the court.
Costa won the first set 25-16 with key kills from senior opposite Jackson Wedbush and senior outside hitter Roy McFarland. Northwood showed some fight, but was ultimately suppressed by Costa’s aggressive and smooth style of play.
“Everyone who got on the court came locked in and ready to play which is why we were so dominant,” McFarland said.
The Mustangs improved their performance in the second set, winning by the large margin of 25-9. According to Wedbush, the game was a solid starting game for team’s CIF.
“It was a nice starting point for our CIF run but we will have to keep up the intensity from here on out,” Wedbush said.
The Mustangs finished their sweep of Northwood by defeating them 25-14 in the third set. The team finished strong in the last set with solid play from senior libero Sam Jones and senior setter Rob Mullahey. According to Mullahey, the team will really need to lock in from here on out and the first game was a good way to set the tone.
“We came in and took care of business today,” Mullahey said. “We have to lock in and maintain concentration to keep our run alive.”
Mira Costa is 23-5 overall and will next play Newbury Park on Thursday. According to Jones, this is an exciting time of year and the whole team is really looking forward to their next step in CIF.
“We need to continue playing better and better as each round comes,” Jones said. “This is an exciting time of the season and everybody is looking forward to every game.”
