Many Costa students recently committed to various types of colleges and universities, including community college. Community college is a beneficial option for students because it grants students time to save money while also considering their passions for the upcoming years.
Community colleges are government-funded junior colleges that supply students with general education classes along with various other courses. According to a report by the Princeton Review, many students have chosen to go to community college for reasons such as finances or uncertainty regarding which colleges to attend or what to major in.
According to a study done by a report done by the American federation of Teachers, a union of professionals, many students feel high pressure from their parents to apply to the most competitive colleges, resulting in them discouraging their students from attending community college. This pressure is harmful and unnecessary because it is potentially refraining students from making a great decision.
In addition, community college is a great option for several reasons, such as allowing students to save money while taking their prerequisite classes, Costa College and Career Center counselor Shalyn Tharayil said. According to Collegeview, a college search website, taking prerequisite classes at community college also helps save money because students can get their general classes done for a lower cost than most students have to pay at universities. This is beneficial because then the student does not need to worry as much about finances when applying to a university after on.
Furthermore, some students have chosen to go to community college next year in order to give themselves additional time to decide what they would like to major in and what school they truly want to attend, senior Athena Booras said; she herself is one of these students. This is the right choice for many as it can help students make the best choice on what school to go to in order to help them get the most out of their experience.
Going to community college also helps students as they have a larger chance of getting into the university they want to attend because they have more time to prepare their applications with information they may have missed when applying the first time around, CCCApply, an online gateway to the California Community Colleges, said. Therefore, more students should choose this route so that they can get closer to their goal and dreams for the future.
Unfortunately, despite all of the benefits community college provides, according to senior Calyssa Frankel, students were understanding of her choice to attend community college next fall and of the reasoning behind it, but many parents throughout the community were judgemental of her choice, an unfair reaction.
Overall, the Manhattan Beach community along with the rest of the nation should begin to realize the value of community college as it gives students time to save money and allows them to properly decide what school they would like to attend. In fact, more students should consider this path due to the plethora of benefits it offers.
