From cupcakes to video game characters to pandas, Arlyn Pillay´s art can make anyone feel special.
Arlyn Pillay is an artist from Irvine, California, with a gallery in Orange County. According to Pillay’s mother, he has been making art ever since he was a child. His goal is to inspire everyone to feel free in creative expression.
Pillay has had his gallery in Orange County for over a year and celebrated its one year anniversary on May 7. The event included an opportunity for each customer to receive three signed art prints from Pillay or four other featured artists, Chase Ashley, Omar Ramo, Chris Waterman, and Tanya Yu. The gallery also showcased new pieces from the artists and even CDs of bands not well-known to the public.
As a whole, Pillay’s gallery is a fun place to visit; the employees and artists are very friendly, the art is a joy to look at, and there is even a place to play video games. However, some of the art are scary and even disturbing, especially because the artist invites people of all ages, even kids, to come to the gallery.
One piece in particular that comes to mind is a piece depicting Pikachu from the hit franchise “Pokemon” as a stack of pancakes. The creature’s mouth is twisted up in a demented smile with maple syrup seeming to bleed out of it. Although creepy art is something that is usually positive to people who go to galleries in the first place, this piece might be a bit too alarming for children, especially because it includes such a well-known, innocent character.
However, it is easy to look past the frightening qualities of some of the pieces due to how much time, effort, and detail are put into the pieces showcased at the event. A piece called “Panda Chaplin” depicts actor Charlie Chaplin as a panda and is full of detail. The viewer can see each little individual pencil mark on the extremely realistic fur. It is truly an astonishing sight.
Besides Pillay, the other artists have immense talent as well. The same detail and effort can be seen in their art, especially Chase Ashley’s work. The artist draws a lot of sketches and digital pieces of monsters, superheroes, and robots that are outstanding and exceptional in detail.
Arlyn Pillay and his fellow artists are people just filled to the brim with creativity and care for their work. Although some of their art are creepy, the reasoning is understandable and can be looked over when visiting the gallery.
Pillay has events and gatherings at his gallery nearly every weekend, but his schedule varies. His gallery is located at 13544 Newport Avenue, Tustin, CA, and is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 11:30am to 9pm and Mondays from 3pm to 9pm.
