The Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees ratified the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school year calendars at the June 1 board meeting.
There were two initial calendar options outlined as Option A and Option B for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years in a tentative agreement between the Manhattan Beach Unified Teachers Association and MBUSD. MBUTA declared Option B to be its selection on May 20.
“MBUTA held its vote, and the ratification was the final step in what has been a long process,” MBUSD Board of Trustees President Ellen Rosenberg said. “It’s good to have the calendar finalized at last so that families, students and staff can make long- term plans.”
In the 2017-18 and 2018-19 calendars under Option B, the first semester will end before Winter Break so students will not have to study for finals during the break, MBUSD Superintendant Dr. Michael Matthews said. School starts two weeks before Labor Day, and both the Thanksgiving and Mid-Winter February break will remain a full week as they did this school year. School will end on June 14, 2018 for the 2017-18 school year and will end on June 13, 2019 for the 2018-19 school year.
“I think our community has made it very clear to me through emails, conversations and phone calls that it truly appreciates the week off during Thanksgiving and in February,” Matthews said. “I think that Option B does a nice job of doing both those things.”
