Mira Costa guidance counselor Sue Bertran is guiding herself away from Costa this year after helping thousands of students get through high school and admitted into college.
Bertran has been working in the South Bay educational field for 33 years. She completed her student-teacher training at Mira Costa, where she shadowed a full-time teacher. She then spent her first eight years teaching high school biology, health and physical education at Redondo Union High School. After hearing about an opening as a student counselor position at Costa, she applied for the job.
“Since I had spent time student-teaching at Costa, I was familiar with some of the counselors,” Bertran said. “I love working with kids, and I also enjoy the aspect of being able to be a support system.”
After hearing about the open Costa counseling position, Bertran went on to gain additional credentials, such as marriage and family therapy.
“I am really going to miss my colleagues because they have become my second family,” Bertran said. “I have my work family of amazingly talented counsellors that I have grown to love and will miss seeing every day during work.”
As a counselor, Bertran strived to know all of her students on an individual level, she said. Although she will miss her students, she looks forward to spending time with friends and family, Bertran stated.
“When I leave Costa, I hope that my students will still have a counselor that can to support them and make them know they are special,” Bertran said.
