Editors-In-Chief
One year as section editors with one reply to every question that was thrown at us: “Let me ask Julia and Jessie.” However, when the editors announced that we were the rising editors-in-chief, dishing off our questions became unacceptable.
We are now tasked with creating a vision of what we want La Vista to be, and we have quickly learned that being editors-in-chief is a tug of war between finding our own path and following the precedents and ideas of those who came before us.
As we stepped into the EIC office for the first time, we couldn’t help but notice that there has been a trend for those placed in high positions: it is common for one in every duo of EICs to have a familial tie to the paper. These siblings not only leave a trail of footprints for their brothers or sisters to follow, but also a survival guide filled with experiences and advice.
Unlike many of our predecessors who came to Mira Costa with a well-worn path pointing them to the doors of room 101, we stumbled into them and fell head over heels for a paper that has brought so many siblings together. And while we don’t have older siblings whose experiences can help us with the next nine issues, this absence of familial ties fails to intimidate us. This year’s editors-in-chief, Julia Sheth and Jessie Rosenfeld, have filled that role for us.
Julia and Jessie, we cannot thank you enough for everything that you have taught us. Your passion and work ethic left a blazing trail for us to follow, and you have shown us what it means to be a part of this family. Just as the editors-in-chief who came before us have left their marks on La Vista, we intend to do the same, because where one line of family members ends, another begins.
So finally, to this year’s new editorial staff: we are filled with excitement as we see your potential. We know that you are more than ready to fill the shoes of the seniors, and we cannot wait to see what this year holds.
Welcome to the La Vista family.
